DOLORES HUERTA ELEMENTARY
Dolores Huerta Elementary (formerly Fairmount Elementary) is located in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA. It is a Spanish dual immersion school serving over 400 students from Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade. The name change was initiated in 2018, and was officially declared Dolores Huerta Elementary in May 2019. Dolores Huerta is a civil rights activist who fought along side Cesar Chavez in the 1960s, for farm workers rights. She also coined the term "Si Se Puede." In 2012 President Obama bestowed Dolores with The Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States. My concept was based on an existing photograph of Dolores Huerta holding up a sign that said "Huelga" (protest) taken back in the 1960s. My idea was to incorporate some of the past by recreating the letters on the sign and flip them to say Huerta instead of Huelga. The origami falcon is a representation of the education system, and origami is the art of paper folding. Both have the same concept to fold/mold the children with knowledge and information.
